Straight from Warcraft lore comes the Death Knight - the only hero class included in the World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King expansion due in late 2008. According to Blizzard, the Death Knight will be available to any player with a level 55+ character in their account and each player can create one Death Knight per realm.
The Death Knight will start in the Eastern Plaguelands in a floating necropolis equipped with several spells, abilities, a few green and blue weapons and armor, and a class-specific mount. Through quests in the necropolis the Death Knight will learn to use his or her new spells and skills and eventually be released to wreak havoc on the rest of the WoW universe.
The Death Knight uses a brand new rune based system to gain access to spells and abilities. There are 3 rune types - blood, frost, and unholy and each has an associated symbol and color. These runes will need to be carved into a Death Knight’s weapons before combat so a choice will have to be made as to which kind of runes to emphasize in their spec and playstyle. Runes are not permanent as they will be exhausted as they’re used and the Death Knight will have to wait until they refresh (approx. 10 seconds) to regain their use.
The Death Knight’s other rune-based mechanic is “Runic Power” which automatically builds up whenever a rune ability is used. Runic Power is used by certain abilities and its’ use will completely drain all available Runic Power. Much like the Rogue’s energy system the more power that’s stored and release the more powerful the effect of the ability.
The Death Knight’s role is more of a hybrid class than a pure tank or DPS class. It combines tanking and damage dealing and will have access to plate armor, the dual wield skill, two-handed weapons, but no shield skill. The tanking style of the Death Knight will be defensive in nature with high armor and increased ability to parry attacks which Blizzard imagines will make them extremely effecting tanking casters.
Lastly, Hero classes like the Death Knight are not meant to be “super classes” and will be similar in strength and ability to current classes. Even so, we can expect to see a significant portion of the player base with high enough characters give the Death Knight a try when the Wrath of the Lich King expansion is released.
With that in mind, I think there’s going to be a great gold-making opportunity here for those of us who think ahead. As the expansion release gets closer, we’re going to read more and more news about the supplies, reagants, and other items needed for the Death Knight to make and use their runes and also for the new Inscription profession.
Previously inexpensive and plentiful items will suddenly be in ultra-high demand as hundreds if not thousands of new Death Knights per server will be scrambling for them in their race to “first Death Knight to 80″ fame. I personally think that leathers will be making a comeback to give the lowest-value profession (skinning) a boost and there’s the potential that enchanters or even leatherworkers could get some new life through Inscription.
In any case, the gold will go to the prepared so start paying attention!

(Notice that this screenshot was taken before I auctioned off the Mature Blue Dragon Sinew (worth 85 gold) and the stacks of Primal Water (worth 430 gold per stack) you can see there in my backpack.)
Here's another screenshot showing a few of my other auctions. I bought that Schematic: Healing Potion Injector for only 20 gold earlier in the day. When the auction clears I'll make at least 75 gold for just a few minute's work because I know what and when to buy and sell at the auction house for maximum profits.
